The Benavides Cancer Institute at the University of Santo Tomas Hospital was established with a vision to provide comprehensive, multidisciplinary cancer care within a unified, integrated facility. Our approach encompasses all aspects of cancer management, including prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up.
Central to our institute is the Department of Radiation Oncology, which works in close collaboration with the Department of Clinical Oncology, Clinical Research Unit, and the Ambulatory Treatment Unit. Since its founding in August 2006, the Department has been equipped with state-of-the-art technologies, including the Varian VitalBeam Linear Accelerator capable of delivering precision radiation therapy and stereotactic body radiotherapy, as well as the Elekta Flexitron High Dose Rate Remote Afterloading Brachytherapy and Oncentra treatment planning system for advanced intracavitary and interstitial procedures.
Our department is a leader in implementing systems-based Radiation Oncology, staffed by subspecialists trained at premier global cancer centers. We have treated over 5,000 patients—both private and charity cases—across a wide range of conditions, including breast, gynecologic, brain, head and neck cancers, and pediatric cases. Our team actively participates in and leads various tumor boards within the Benavides Cancer Institute, and we are committed to a holistic, science-driven, and evidence-based approach to cancer care, believing it results in the best outcomes. Our Radiation Oncologists and trainees frequently engage in multidisciplinary consultations with their medical and surgical colleagues.
In addition to our clinical work, the Department is actively involved in local and international research initiatives, collaborating with leading global academic cancer centers. Our researchers have authored over 90 peer-reviewed publications and have participated in numerous industry- and investigator-initiated international clinical trials in partnership with renowned global institutions.
Our residency training program, established in 2009, pioneered the first systems-based radiation oncology education system in the country, serving as a model for other programs. Most of our graduates have gone on to competitive subspecialty fellowship programs worldwide and have returned to contribute as faculty, further advancing specialty education and patient care. The University of Santo Tomas Hospital Department of Radiation Oncology stands as a beacon of excellence in cancer care, characterized by its comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach and commitment to advancing the field. The department has not only provided cutting-edge treatment with state-of-the-art technologies but has also fostered a culture of collaboration and innovation through its research and education initiatives. The remarkable achievements of our Radiation Oncology Department, from its substantial patient impact to its leadership in both clinical and academic spheres, underscore our dedication to improving patient outcomes and advancing cancer care on a global scale. As we continue to build on our successes, we remain steadfast in our mission to offer exceptional care, drive research advancements, and cultivate future leaders in oncology.
