The UST Hospital offers comprehensive training programs with robust “Outcome Based Curricula”, mentored by specialists at the top of their fields. Close ties with the UST Faculty of Medicine and Surgery and its staff further ensure that our interns, residents, and fellows gain the knowledge and the skills they will need to be successful in their chosen specializations. Our trainees are exposed to a wide variety of cases and undergo various programs that will prepare them for real-world medical challenges. These programs include didactics, conferences, workshops, simulation, and case discussions, all with the goal to improve decision-making and emergency response skills. The training is also always guided by Ethical guidelines and principles, ensuring that the patients will receive not just the best care, but just as importantly, care that is fueled by genuine compassion.
Research opportunities abound, and the trainees are highly encouraged to look into projects that will ultimately benefit our patients. Many of the completed researches have been published and/or have been chosen to be presented in international symposia. The UST Hospital continues to contribute significantly to the research output of the University.
The UST Hospital is the teaching hub for our students from the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, as well as the students from the College of Nursing. It has also opened its doors to other affiliates, both local and international, who have requested to have additional exposure and learning opportunities.
Aside from the education and training, as well as the opportunities for research, the UST Hospital, through the Department of Medical Education and Research, also ensures that all trainees have support for their mental well-being. DMER facilitates activities that focus on mental health care, improvement, and awareness, and works closely with the Department of Neuroscience and Behavioral Medicine to take care of the needs of the trainees as regards their mental well-being. Mentoring programs are already in place in several Departments, and the rest of the specializations are being highly encouraged to put up their own.
DMER also organizes activities that foster service to the community. Aside from facilitating the participation of the trainees in various medical missions, DMER hosts regular lay fora for several communities, enhancing patient education, and encouraging patients to be more involved in the decision making about their ailments. These fora serve both as service to the community, as well as enhancing the communication skills of the trainees, ultimately benefitting both parties.
